Karlach is one of the most powerful and engaging party members you can recruit during your journey through the early stages of Baldur's Gate 3. As a fiery Tiefling Barbarian who escaped the chaotic Blood War, she brings immense combat strength and a vibrant personality to your adventuring team. Finding her requires exploring specific areas along the Risen Road and handling a conflict with surrounding hunters.

Where to Find Karlach in Act 1

To locate Karlach, you must navigate toward the northern region of the Act 1 map beyond the Blighted Village. You can reach her position by crossing the stream north of the village or jumping across broken bridges near the tollhouse area. Karlach is sitting near the edge of a stream at coordinates X: -104, Y: 520, surrounded by smoldering fires.

Before approaching her, make sure you have an open slot in your active party if you want her to join immediately. If your party is currently full, she will still speak with you but will direct you to meet up later. Preparing your squad ahead of time ensures a smooth transition into your active roster.

Resolving the Hunt the Devil Quest

When you first speak with Karlach, she reveals that a group of self-proclaimed Paladins of Tyr is hunting her down. These paladins are actually followers of the devil Zariel, stationed in a nearby tollhouse to collect her soul. To secure Karlach as a permanent companion, you must defeat these hostile hunters led by Anders.

Positioning your party strategically inside and outside the tollhouse before starting combat makes the fight significantly easier. Defeating Anders and his allies satisfies Karlach's immediate quest line and grants you useful early-game loot. Once the fight is over, Karlach calms down and officially pledges her loyalty to your group.

Managing Wyll and Party Dynamics

If you have already recruited Wyll, he will initially view Karlach as a dangerous devil that must be destroyed. When the two meet, you must mediate their confrontation through dialogue to help Wyll realize he was misled. Successfully calming the situation prevents violent conflict and keeps both companions in your camp.

Maintaining positive approval with Karlach also requires making moral choices that protect innocent refugees. Betraying the Druid Grove or committing unnecessary atrocities will cause her to leave your party permanently. Keeping her happy ensures you retain a top-tier frontline combatant for the rest of your adventure.

Stabilizing Karlach Infernal Engine

After joining your group, Karlach explains that her internal engine is constantly overheating and requires maintenance. To upgrade her engine and allow her to touch others safely, you need to collect Infernal Iron found across various dungeons. Bringing this rare material to Dammon the Tiefling blacksmith unlocks crucial upgrades for her quest line.
